# Definition
According to [Merriam-Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/portmanteau), portmanteau refers to:
> A word or part of a word made by combining the spellings and meanings of two or more other words or word parts (such as smog from smoke and fog)
On occasion, I find these to be a fun way to express an idea.
Aside from that, it is also:
> a large suitcase
# Connection to public PKM project.
When I was coming up with a name for my public [[On PKM|PKM]] project, my goal was to make a clever name that would allow me to refer to it as a project. After some brainstorming, I came up with Imprompt Bru, which is a portmanteau of impromptu and brew. I describe my thinking about the name on the [[🧭 Home|start page]]:
![[🧭 Home#^65bab0]]
After sharing the name with a few folks, including [[Max Roberts]] and [[Steve Morton]], I decided that it was worth further clarifying to the name by using the version of a u with an umlaut (ü). And so Imprompt Brü was born. [[Max Roberts|Max]] also encouraged me that I should consider getting a domain for the project. After some discussion, I acquired www.impromptbru.com and [www.impromptbrew.com](https://impromptbrew.com). This allows me to draw in the visitor even if they spell 'bru' and 'brew'.
**Other Portmanteau's[^1] that I enjoy:**
- Animatronics (animation + electronics)
- Botox (botulism + toxin)
- Brainiac (brain + maniac)
- Brexit (Britain + exit)
- Dumbfounded (dumb + confounded)
- Email (electronic + mail)
- Gastropub (gastronomy + pub)
- Hangry (hungry + angry)
- Hazmat (hazardous + material)
- Podcast (iPod + broadcast)
- Webinar (web + seminar) – a presentation or seminar held online
[^1]: I really wish the plural of portmanteau was portmanteaux. Sadly, this is not the case.
