# History
A personal knowledge management ([[PKM]]) system is a way of capturing your thoughts and ideas about topics you care about. It is a tool for thought that allows you to explore ideas. These systems are not new, with slip boxes and card catalogs being one example of older PKM systems, the term "personal knowledge management" seems to have origitnated around 1999[^1].

## A few tips on navigating my PKM system
- For those new to [[Personal Knowledge Management System|PKM]]:
- In this system, notes are connected based on the ideas contained within the notes.
- Connected notes are denoted by the purple in text links in text. Some links go to a desitation, and some are placeholders for future notes. Exploring connected notes helps to explore connected ideas and concpts.
- Ideas typically come from good primary and secondary sources. By talking to the text, new ideas can emerge. These take the form of [[atomic notes]], [[hypothesis|hypotheses]], lists, checklists, and can eventually be the basis for a short abstract or longer blog style post.
- Based on the links, ideas are interconnected, and you can navigate based on:
- Listing of Notes to the left sidebar (including by Topic)
- Backlinks (appear at the bottom of notes)
- Interactive Graph (shown to the right)
